Everyone knows how in history Alexander the Great was a mighty king and a fierce conqueror. Even though he lived around 300 B.C., his reputation today still lives on as the conqueror of the entire “known world.”
The story goes that when he realized there was “nothing left” to conquer after Asia, he actually wept. But besides being a great conqueror, he was compassionate to his people. Every year he set aside one day, called Compassionate Day.
Apparently, he would randomly select people across his kingdom who could come ask the king for a special request that he would grant – whatever it was! Amazing! However, most people were timid in front of someone so great and mighty and would only ask for food, clothes, or money for medicine, etc.
However, one year, things were different. One man shared his special request to the king’s spokesman.
“Could you please tell the king I would like a large palace? And I want it to be with a large banquet hall with a big meal to host all my friends,” the man asked. The spokesman stopped him with irritation and anger that he would ask such a large request. “What impertinence! Don’t you see all the other people asking for food and medicine? How dare you ask the king for such a large item like a palace!”
King Alexander noticed the commotion and asked the spokesman, “What does this man want?”
The spokesman reluctantly turned towards the king and whispered so only he could hear – “King, I’m so sorry to tell you this. This man is being completely unreasonable and I know you will be upset. But he is asking for a palace. Not just any palace, but one with a large banquet hall because apparently he has a lot of friends. Also he wants the whole thing set up with a big meal furnished. I’m so sorry, he insisted, even though I told him it was unreasonable.”
The king paused for a moment, then all of a sudden, with a big smile, he turned towards the petitioner and happily said, “Request granted!”
The spokesmen’s jaw dropped. “But… how can you grant such a outrageously large request?”
The king smiled and said, “You see, all these people are asking for food, medicine, mundane type of things that anyone really could give them. They think that’s the only thing I can give. But they don’t need a king to give them these things. Anyone with extra goods could do that. But a king…for the first time, this man has made me feel like the king I am. For only a king could grant such a request!”
Our Heavenly King and Father wants to give us good things – more than we can imagine or think of! If we come to Him in prayer and present our requests he will listen and answer. Matthew 7:11 says “So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.”
God wants to give us good things – even if they might be different than what we envision.
James 1:17 tell us “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows,” meaning God is not inconsistent. He loves us and thinks of us constantly.”For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).
God wants to hear our requests and listen to our hearts, just as a best friend or parent would. Would you open your heart today? He would love to get to know you.
